What Camera Do You Use? (And Why It Doesn't Matter)

I get asked this a lot: “What camera do you use?”

It's a totally fair question—especially in a world where we’re constantly seeing perfectly crisp, moody, or nostalgic images fly past our screens. But here’s the honest answer: it doesn’t really matter.

That’s not to say I don’t care about gear. I do, I love it. I enjoy the design, the quirks, the tactile feel of a good camera. I have old 4mp digital cameras which Ive taken photographs with that Im proud of. Special shoutout to the Olympus OM-1 and a set of Zuiko prime lenses, these beauties have become staples in my film setup. Compact, reliable, and with glass that sings on celluloid, they’ve earned their spot.

But let me be clear: whether you’re shooting on an OM-1, a disposable film camera, your iPhone, or some full-frame mirrorless monster you mortgaged your house for, just go out and use whatever you can get your hands on.

So, the best camera? It’s the one you’ll actually carry, the one you’ll point at something that catches your eye. It’s the one that helps you tell a story.

So, yes, I’ll share my gear and tell you which I feel is the best. But never feel like you need this or that to make good work. Your vision matters more than your tools.
